Inauguration Notes–The Speech

Posted by Jeremy Shulkin

Here are some notable passages, and if you followed his campaign, none of them should strike as surprising:

“[Worcester Tech] serves as a powerful symbol of our commitment to public education and our belief that all of our young people should have the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

“The building of this school happened because of a powerful cooperative effort between our local and state government, the business community, our building trade unions, and leaders throughout our city who came together to construct the finest technical school in the country.”

Inauguration Notes–The Crowd

Posted by Jeremy Shulkin

State Rep. Harriette Chandler, Congressman Jim McGovern and Lt. Gov. Tim Murray are in the crowd, which really shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody. There’s good-sized crowd here, filling up about 3/4 of Worcester Tech’s auditorium. John Brissette–who spent some time working on O’Brien’s campaign this fall– is sitting in front of me with a full copy of O’Brien’s speech. There’s no way to ignore the feeling that O’Brien is being groomed for things beyond being the Mayor of Worcester.

Inauguration Notes–The Bus

Posted by Jeremy Shulkin

For today’s inauguration Mayor Joe O’Brien had a WRTA city bus shuttle attendees to and from City Hall and Worcester Technical High School at no charge. Apparently it was quite a scene.

A source of ours who rode it said that the atmosphere was “high energy,” and O’Brien, Jim McGovern and Barbara Haller all hopped on. After the then Mayor-Elect made a speech about the merits of public transportation the crowd burst out into a rousing rendition of “The Wheels on the Bus,” but couldn’t make it past the first verse.

It was all planned down to the smallest detail with the destination board on its front reading “Welcome Mr. Mayor.”
