Kate “Twitter” Toomey

Here it is…the first “official” city council order requesting the City Manager start Twittering.

“Request City Manager to personally engage the public in conversation through the use of twittering so that he and his cabinet members gain input concerning spending, taxation and transparency.”

This could be the Worcester’s most fun Pandora’s box.

Stimulus for everyone!

This stimulus funding is starting to feel a lot like a birthday at an overly generous grandparent’s house after you’ve gotten a bit older—you feel guilty to take what you’re given, but you still get excited at every new present.

The latest for Worcester? $4,199,498 for IDEA funding through the stimulus bill for special education, on top of the $14 million announced yesterday for basic school spending.

The Abby Kelley Foster School received $209,831 today and Seven Hills Charter got $111,749.

Rodriguez KO’s Thompson

In the first professional card in almost 40 years at Mechanic’s Hall, hometown hero Edwin Rodriguez floored and later KO’d Patrick Thompson in the second round.  Thompson, who had gone the distance with some big names in boxing, was stunned early in the round and was visibly stunned when his corner threw in the towel in front of a raucous partisan crowd chanting for Rodriguez.

After the fight, Rodriguez’ new promoter Lou DiBella said he was very impressed by Rodriguez, and plans on having him fight three times a year in Worcester going forward.

More to come tomorrow and in next week’s issue.
