A press release from the City Manager’s office says that the Worcester Sharks have chosen to enact the last two extensions on their 2006 contract, ensuring they will use the DCU Center as their home until 2016.
The team made the decision well before they needed to. The contract structured a five year lease, with a two year option followed by another three year option.
According to the release, City Manager Michael O’Brien organized a group of “local business leaders” called the “Power Players” to rally support for the Sharks. Apparently, that the initiative worked. The team and city reported that attendance rose 26 percent this year while ticket revenue increased 28 percent.
We’ve put in a call to the Sharks for more information, and will update later.
