Congressman Jim McGovern was featured in an ABC News piece earlier this week regarding a taped torture session of an Afghani grain dealer by a United Arab Emirates Sheikh.
The tape features the member of the royal family using whips, an electric cattle prod, and a plank with a potruding nail on the businessman, including on his genitals and anus. The sheikh pours salt in the man’s wounds, and later has him run over with an SUV.
Congressman McGovern, chairman of the House Human Rights Commission, told ABC’s Nightline that the United States was compelled to do something.
“Granted that they’re strategically located in a key part of the world, but it’s hard to imagine that we’re going to keep going on as if it’ business as usual when this kind of stuff happens,” said McGovern. “My guess is that this is just the tip of the iceberg.”
