Boston wins population challenge; Worcester next?

Boston just successfully won an appeal of the US Census Bureau’s population estimate, putting their total count over 600,000.  The city’s challenge was based on what they said was an undercount of college students and other people living in group housing situations.

Worcester has challenged the Bureau’s count on similar grounds; the city is expected to get a favorable ruling next week.

While it may seem like a waste of effort, a higher population count means a lot when it comes to federal funding, redistricting of congressional districts, and bragging rights.

I used to care so much about the bragging rights. Lately I think it is more of a curse then a blessing.
