City council live blog — 1/18/11

Posted by Jeremy Shulkin

Want to know how much employee health costs are costing the City? Then tonight’s your night. Keep up with the agenda and on Cover It Live. See you at 7:00.

Update: A sheet of ice on the roads and sidewalks can shut down city government, but it can’t stop a reporter from showing up at city hall expecting a council meeting. So yes, the meeting was cancelled.

Snow updates

Some things to keep in mind as the second snow storm in a week passes through Worcester. We’ll be updating this post throughout the day.

Update 11:30: The City warns homeowners that “The anticipated heavy snow, followed by periods of mixed precipitation, present an ongoing threat for localized street and basement flooding, as well as roof collapses. All citizens and businesses are encouraged to monitor and help clear storm drains and catch basins in their neighborhoods during this storm to minimize local flooding problems from this run-off. After the storm, snow not cleared off of roofs acts as a sponge, absorbing any additional sleet and rain, contributing to stress on structures.”

The City also suggests you use a roof rake to get excess snow down.

Update 10:34: The Telegram reports that “all lanes of the Massachusetts Turnpike westbound in Charlton have been closed because of a jackknifed tractor-trailer.”

DPW: Trash and recycling pick up is happening as normal, which means every collection day is pushed back 24 hours because of the holiday yesterday. The winter parking ban is in effect. Call 929-1300 for more info.

Weather: The Weather Channel says we’ll get around 4 inches of snow today, and by 12:00 the precipitation will turn into sleet.

The National Weather Service has declared a “winter storm warning” for most of Massachusetts, including all of Worcester County.

Here’s an image of the storm, taken by the NWS at 10:00 am:
