A Rotary, Ruined

Now they’ve gone and done it.

The one redeeming quality - the one thing that made up for all the hieroglyphics and silly lane changes at the new Washington Square rotary - is gone.  They’ve gone and put in landscaping.

When they began taking apart the old rotary and ripping out the bushes, we were amazed at how much easier the driving experience became, now that you could see around the circle.  So it wasn’t the SIZE of the circle all these years, it was the ridiculous shrubbery.  Who knew?

And so it was at the new rotary: Confusing symbols and merging lanes — but at least you could see the oncoming traffic! So we were a little confused driving through this morning why it seemed more difficult, and then it hit us.

SHRUBS!  Lots and lots and lots of little shrubs!

We’re all done for.

  • Would you expect anything less? The state is running the project and it is in Worcester.

Twice the likelyhood that it will suck!

  • The point of a round-about is to reduce traffic speed and produce a more consistent steady flow of traffic. That is why the traffic enters from a right-angle, there are traffic islands, the radius of the curve is small and the view of traffic is reduced to being able to see traffic already in the round-about. I think it will take a while for drivers here to figure it out - then they will change it again. I like the round-about but am placing my money on some lights and a tunnel similar to Lincoln Square for the next iteration.
