A Day of No Slogans

Duncan Arsenault just posted a call out of (YET ANOTHER) new slogan, “Central Massachusetts: So much, so close.”

“For many people living in Worcester it is a constant feeling of things being just out of reach. We were ’so close’ to having Scorsese film a movie here, we were ’so close’ to having a airport, so close to having a long list of things most of us want.

Maybe I am over thinking it, but there is a trend that I see in Worcester of some really bad marketing and poorly conceived slogans.”

We couldn’t agree more with Duncan.

“The Heart of the Commonwealth” has been named the “City that Reads,” the “City on the Move,” although some prefer us to be “Moving in the Right Direction.” And we’ve been implored to “Choose Worcester,” the city with “No place for hate” because it’s the “Right Place. Right Time.”

And those are just a few of the official ones, to say nothing of Wormtown/War-town’s alt-monikers, including “City that Breeds,” “City that Bleeds,” and “Paris of the 80’s.”

Hell, we’re coming up with better slogans with this auto-generator. Our favorites so far: “Did somebody say Worcester?” and “Fill it to the Rim with Worcester.”

We think it’s time for a stop to this nonsense. And so, in conjunction with Worcesterite.com, we declare next Thursday, May 29 to be “A DAY OF NO SLOGANS!”

You have a favorite failed moniker?  Tell us in the comments section.

And yes, there will be a Celebration of No Slogans next week.  We hope you’ll join us.
