Without a doubt, the first — and probably most — bizarre scene of the last 48 hours of the campaign for City Council was Rick Rushton shaking hands (we dare not say “pressing the flesh”) with a drag queen outside Club Blu at 2:00 am.
Rushton was in the seventh or so hour of his 24-hour “campaign marathon” when we caught up with him on Water Street early this morning, and it was a sight to see. Greeting the Sunday night crowd, already feeling the effects of the Monday morning hangover, and visiting with the night shift at Widoff’s bakery.
Not everything has gone to plan — the scheduled early-morning police ride-along never happened — and Rushton sounded a bit loopy on a call a few minutes ago. He should be fun at tonight’s pre-election day party at the Webster House.
We’ll be back posting here full-time first thing in the morning—don’t forget to post in the comments section if you see anything interesting.
